Frequently Asked Questions

Diamond Tip Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive procedure that effectively renews the overall skin tone and texture. It is a highly beneficial treatment for addressing various skin concerns and conditions such as sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scarring, melasma, and more.

This safe procedure is suitable for most skin types and is chosen by individuals with the following skin concerns:

  1. Fine lines and wrinkles
  2. Hyperpigmentation, age spots, and brown spots
  3. Enlarged pores and blackheads
  4. Acne and acne scars
  5. Stretch marks
  6. Dull-looking skin complexion
  7. Uneven skin tone and texture
  8. Melasma
  9. Sun damage

Diamond Tip Microdermabrasion is typically performed in-salon by a trained dermal therapist and takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete, (depending on the location of the treatment). The procedure does not require anaesthesia or a numbing agent.

There are various methods for performing microdermabrasion, depending on the specific device used. At Skin Lab Sydney, we use the Diamond-tip hand piece, which gently exfoliates dead cells from the skin’s surface while simultaneously suctioning them away.

The depth of the abrasion can be adjusted based on the pressure applied to the hand piece, the numbering of the tip, and the duration of the suction on the skin. This type of microdermabrasion applicator is commonly used in more sensitive facial areas, such as around the eyes.

Overall, Diamond Tip Microdermabrasion offers a safe and effective way to improve skin texture, address various skin concerns, and achieve a revitalised and refreshed appearance.

After undergoing microdermabrasion, there is little to no downtime, and you should be able to resume your daily activities immediately. However, it’s essential to avoid strenuous exercise, sweating, saunas, and hot showers for at least 24 hours to ensure optimal results.

Our team will work with you to design a personalized plan that outlines the recommended number of initial sessions and periodic maintenance treatments. These plans can also be combined with other facial packages for a comprehensive skincare routine.

Common side effects of microdermabrasion include mild tenderness, swelling, and redness, which generally subside within a few hours after the treatment

A consultation with our aesthetician will be conducted to determine the suitability of microdermabrasion for your skin. In case microdermabrasion is not recommended, an alternative treatment like a chemical peel may be suggested. During the consultation, any potential contraindications to the therapy will be assessed to see if they are relevant to your specific situation.

Contraindications to microdermabrasion include:

  1. Active infection of any type, such as Herpes simplex virus or pustular acne.
  2. Impaired skin barrier conditions such as psoriasis or atopic dermatitis.
  3. Oral retinoic acid use.
  4. Keloid scarring.
  5. Sunburn.
  6. Skin cancer.
  7. Active exfoliative treatments in the last two weeks minimum, such as waxing, laser, IPL, or chemical peel.
  8. Recent use of topical agents like glycolic acids, alpha hydroxy acids, or retinoids.

Before your treatment, please avoid using retinol, retinoic acid, or other exfoliating creams such as Retin-A, Renova, Tretinoin, skin lighteners, or topical acne products like Adapalene, Differin, Tazorac, or Tazarotene for 24 to 72 hours (1 to 3 days). Also, refrain from direct sun exposure or using tanning creams/sprays for at least a week prior to your treatment. If you’ve recently undergone a chemical peel or any other skin procedure, including injections, we recommend waiting two to three weeks before undergoing microdermabrasion.

For at least two weeks before your treatment, avoid any hair removal treatments on the area that will be treated.

If you’ve had chemical peels or other skin procedures done, it’s best to wait 2-4 weeks before scheduling your microdermabrasion session.

Please inform us of any outside or at-home skin treatments you’ve had before or between your scheduled treatments.

If you have an active cold sore or suspect you may be developing one, we kindly request that you reschedule your appointment. If you have a history of cold sores, it may be beneficial to start a prophylactic dose of your prescribed or over-the-counter cream four days prior to your treatment to help prevent a recurrence.

We recommend refraining from wearing makeup to your appointment. For male clients, shaving is advised.

Before each scheduled treatment, remember to wash your face and neck with a non-oily, non-soap-based cleanser.

If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to us. We want to ensure you have the best experience possible during your microdermabrasion sessions.

Any redness, temporary flaking, or mild discoloration will usually subside shortly after your microdermabrasion treatment.

To optimize your microdermabrasion recovery time and achieve the best results, it is essential to follow the post-procedure instructions below:

  1. Keep the new skin clean by using a gentle cleanser and ensure it stays moisturized. Refrain from using over-the-counter or medical-grade retinol, tretinoin, benzoyl peroxide, topical acne products, alpha or beta hydroxy acids for 3-4 days after the treatment or as instructed by your skincare professional.

  2. While anti-inflammatory creams or cold compresses might be needed rarely, they can be used as necessary. However, avoid any actions that could cause scarring, such as scratching or picking the treated area.

  3. For one week following the treatment, it is important to avoid any skin trauma from harsh chemicals, excessive rubbing, or tanning.

  4. If you cannot avoid sun exposure, make sure to use broad-spectrum sun protection with a minimum SPF of 30+.

By following these instructions, you can enhance the effectiveness of your microdermabrasion and ensure the best possible outcome for your skin.
