Welcome to my first ever blog. My name is Tanya and I’m the owner of Skin Lab Sydney. I wanted to get on here and tell you about my personal experiences over the years with beauty, skincare and treatments. In the meantime, you can check out the services I currently offer.

Let’s dive right into it, I mean, after all, you clicked on the link to read this article and if you’ve got this far then it means I’ve got you wondering what I’m about to say.

Milia, that’s right! Do you know what it means? I surely did not until they popped by for a permanent visit. Thanks to google (knows everything) searches and after many reads about Milia it turns out that I had exactly that.

What is a Milia and how is it developed?

Milia develop when tiny skin flakes become trapped in small pockets near the surface of the skin. Although Milia can develop at any age, they are most common among newborns. That is what they say, but in my case, at 36 (the age they appeared) it is possible to have Milia and multiple ones at that. Several factors cause Milia in adults. Most commonly, they occur due to dead skin building up and getting trapped in the pores near the surface of the skin. If the build-up doesn’t get expelled naturally, it can become a small cyst. This type is called Milia. The only difference in adults is that it could be there permanently if not treated, and can spread rapidly around the eyes and face.

You’re wondering what caused mine since I’m into my skincare regime. That would be near impossible to have imperfect skin? Right? (said no one ever). Wrong! I got mine from using eye cream around my eyes. Yes, eye cream! I know right! Who would have known?.

It all started when I excitedly walked into Mecca to purchase a few luxury items that I’ve been wanting to try out for so long. It was the Luminous Deep Hydration Firming Eye Serum by Tatcha. The cost of this eye serum was AUD 136.00.

I was not too sure about where the items were located, so I requested some assistance from one of the Mecca Hosts (also known as Customer Service Representative). She was lovely and spent some time explaining the Tatcha brand. The Mecca Host then began explaining “how to” use the eye serum, she told me that I should squeeze some out of the tube and apply under my eye and then move outwards and in an upward motion and pause at the corner of my eye. Even though this host was probably about 15 years younger than me I thought, she must know something that I don’t.

I hurry home and start using this amazing product. I say amazing because it did what it said it would, firms and hydrates. Little did I know, the technique I was shown at Mecca was not the right thing to do. The following weeks of using the eye serum, these little white spots appear around my left eye. At first, I didn’t panic. In the hopes of light exfoliation and continuous skincare treatments, that it would help make it disappear.

Two weeks in and these white spots are still around. I start to panic as it starts to spread around my eye. By this point, I end up with 4 Milia’s.

I start my research on how to get rid of these stubborn white spots for good. After my research, I put together a “to do” list.

  1. Gentle Exfoliation (tried and tested, results = failed)
  2. Chemical Peel (wasn’t keen on this)
  3. Ditch heavy creams (stopped using the eye serum)
  4. Professional Extraction (this was going to be my last option)
  5. Avoid increased sun exposure (I always incorporate 50+ sunscreen in my daily skincare routine)

The above list was doable, however, I wanted to try something at home, to avoid chemical peels and professional extractions, so I continued my research and came across some articles about Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C. Studies have suggested that these two ingredients combined, significantly improve the biomechanical parameters of the skin, which includes wrinkles and skin texture, as well as elasticity, without notable adverse effects.

I brought the powder form of Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C powder and combined the two. Adding this to my daily routine for the next 5 weeks, before makeup application in the morning and before bedtime. Within the first two weeks, I saw results, and have now included this in my daily routine.

Here is a photo, with a total of five weeks in treating my eye area. The first two weeks the smallest of Millia’s disappeared (I forgot to take a photo at the start), by the fifth week there were none left.

I hope you enjoyed reading this article as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Please keep in mind I am not a Dermatologist or a Doctor. I am sharing my journey in the hopes that it may help you or someone you know who suffers from Milia.

Until next time… Tanya xx
